Description
Mesa Arch is in Canyonlands National Park Utah. I saw this image in one of my Outdoor Photography Magazines, and I had to locate Mesa Arch on my trip to Utah.
I hiked to a location that looked like a good vantage point, set up my tripod, made sure I had the mesa framed, and waited for the sun to begin setting.
Mesa Arch is an iconic arch that spans fifty feet across the top of a 500-foot vertical cliff. It is classified as a pothole arch, because it was formed by surface water that pooled on the sandstone behind the arch, that slowly eroded the rock. This resulted an arch that dangles across the mesa’s edge.
The arch provides the frame for a stunning Utah landscape. Along the mesa to the east is another arch, named Washing Woman Arch. Below the mesa is the prominent white rim of spectacular canyons carved by the Colorado River. Rounding out the view are the peaks of the La Sal Mountains that meet the sky at the horizon. I shot a series of photos, and I think this is one of the best ones. ©Copyright 2004 Lorraine Palumbo. All Rights Reserved.
